The generation of heat in body tissues by the
passage of high-frequency electric currents
between two electrodes placed on the body,
used in diathermic surgery and to relieve
arthritic pain. In diathermic surgery, one
electrode is very much reduced for cutting
purposes and the other correspondingly
enlarged and placed at a distance on the
body. The high-frequency current produces, at
the tip of the cutting electrode, sufficient
heat to cut tissues, or to coagulate and kill
tissue cells, with a minimum of bleeding.
